Why are Aachen gingerbreads called “Printen”?
Aachen has evidence of gingerbread with images dating from as early as the 15th century. The gingerbread pastry was then shaped using a wooden mould. Similar to the “printing” process. Over time these gingerbreads became too expensive for people, and often too hard and not sweet enough. Demand fell. Using improved recipes, a new type of gingerbread was created and given the name “Printe” from the verb meaning to “print”.

Why are herb “Printen” hard?
The only traditional ingredients for “Printen” are simply sugar and/or honey, flour and spices, but no fat. The high sugar content and, especially, the candied sugar in “Printen” make the cake hard and brittle.

Why are dominoes so similar that they can be mixed up?
Dominoes are produced using modern machines. The different layers of a domino are laid onto one another (gingerbread/jelly/marzipan) and cut into equally-sized cubes by the machine. They are then coated with milk or white chocolate, or plain chocolate for those who prefer the classical taste.
